1973 Ford Maverick Sedan [Down On The Street]

Welcome to Down On The Street, where we admire old vehicles found parked on the streets of the Island That Rust Forgot: Alameda, California. We've seen two-door Mavericks here, and now here's our first sedan.

A fair number of Mavericks roam the island, including this '70, this '74, and this '74. The non-Grabbers are still not considered particularly collectible, so we must assume these cars have stayed clear of The Crusher on the strength of their daily-driving prowess.

In 1973, the base Maverick sedan was listed at $2,297. For that price, you got the 200-cubic-inch inline six-cylinder engine, which was helpful in teaching drivers the virtues of patience. With the cheapest Dodge Dart sedan that year selling for over 200 bucks more, the Maverick was a pretty good deal. Should we mention the $2,306 1973 Datsun 510 here?

Here's another spot with two DOTS cars within sight of one another; that's the 1960 Studebaker Lark just around the corner.

Ford Considers Introducing A Compact XUV To The Lincoln Line-Up

Ford is expected to phase out the Escape SUV within the next decade, and when they do, talk from the top suggests they might usher in a new Lincoln model to replace it. Ford’s product development chief, Derrick Kuzak, admitted Ford is seriously considering adding a C-segment vehicle to the Lincoln line-up, most likely basing if off the Ford Kuga XUV currently sold abroad. Kuzak also hinted that the European small car the Ford Ka might be included in the American invasion, a prospect we are notably less than enthusiastic about.

Initially introduced last September at the Frankfurt Auto Show, the 2009 Ford Kuga sits on the same C1 platform shared by European model Ford S-Max minivan and the Ford Focus subcompact. Roughly equivalent in size to the Ford Escape, the Ford Kuga is essentially a European-badged Ford Edge, not an entirely drastic departure from Ford’s typical SUV template. What separates the Kuga from its American counterpart are its luxurious details, which would certainly be befitting of a Lincoln should the Kuga ever make it’s modified debut stateside. Bottom line: Ford Euro, how about this: give us a Lincoln/Kuga luxury crossover, and keep the Ka, please.

A Different Kind Of Escape Hybrid [Caption This]

Ford's Thai press people apparently took the concept of a launch entirely too literally. Nevertheless, a propane-gas hybrid Escape gondola edition seems to make the perfect "caption this" shot.

6 Ways To Damage Your Car, Possibly Irreparably

The folks over at Cracked.com have put together a list of the Top 6 gas-saving schemes created by “companies” of dubious distinction looking to cash in on the ever-increasing gas prices. The products all claim to produce better gas mileage, and almost all of them require some kind of mechanical alteration to you car.

Egineering marvels I enjoyed especially were the Intake Twister & Tornado Fuel Saver - an engine modification of such questionable legitimacy, engineers at Popular Mechanics were afraid to test it, and the Bio Petro Improver Powder - created by a company that was ultimately shut down by the Texas Attorney General due to outright fraud.

My favorite by far, however, comes in at number 6: Water4Gas. Apparently, with a few well-executed modifications to a jelly jar and some neon-colored party straws, you too can create your own alternative source of fuel!

Who Should Buy Volvo? [Question Of The Day]

As we reported earlier today, Ford is officially looking to sell Volvo, the last piece of the Premier Auto Group. In a better economy we suspect parting with Volvo wouldn't be so easy, but the $4.4 billion the company is probably worth is a nice chunk of much-needed cash for the automaker and, equally as important, it would be beneficial for Ford to subtract Volvo's losses from their overall quarterly performance. Who could buy the Swedish brand? Chinese company Chery expressed interest but may not have enough capital to acquire the automaker. Ratan Tata could make a move but, if he was interested, he'd have probably tried for the brand the first time. Who does that leave?

The original bidding war took place between Volkswagen AG, Fiat and Ford, with Detroit winning the prize. VW has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to brands and doesn't need any help enhancing its presence in North America. Fiat, on the other hand, has been looking for a cheap way to get more mainstream products to the US and Volvo could be a better bridge than Chrysler, which has been rumored to be in talks with the Italian automaker. We think selling Alfa Romeo Breras and Fiat 500s next to XC60s could make more sense than selling them next to than F430s so we wouldn't be surprised to see the Italian company make some entreaties to Ford.

Spy Shots: The US Version of the 2011 Ford Fiesta Sedan

Automotive Traveler magazine contributor Mark Fletcher shows why it’s always a good idea to keep your camera by your side as you never know when you’ll encounter a camouflaged prototype, in this case the US-spec version of Ford’s upcoming 2011 Fiesta.

While we know that the Ford Fiesta is coming to the North America next year, Ford is going to great lengths to keep front and rear details of the domestic version secret while the cars undergo their final validation tests. So while the 100 Fiestas currently taking part in Ford’s Fiesta Movement program gives us a good idea of its overall silhouette, we’ll still be seeking out the detail differences between the European and US versions. Yesterday, on his return trip from Las Vegas, Mark Fletcher hit pay dirt as he was able to capture some exceptionally clear images of Ford’s upcoming B-segment subcompact. Read more about this discovery at Automotive Traveler.

Steve Saleen announces 2010 Signature Series Mustangs

The 2010 Ford Mustang made its debut just a few weeks ago at the LA Auto Show and already various tuners around the country are preparing their variants based on the new model. Steve Saleen has beat everyone to the punch and is the first to announce his new lineup called the Signature Series 460 Mustangs. Each will feature a supercharged version of Ford's 4.6L V8 starting at 475 horsepower and going all the way up to over 650 raging ponies underneath the hood. Keep in mind that the mechanicals of the 2010 Mustang are carried over from the current model, so we should expect the aftermarket industry to carry over their performance parts for the 4.6L V8, as well. Aerodynamic enhancements for the SMS Mustang will be penned by noted designer Phil Frank, and the cars will also feature upgrades for the drivetrain, suspension, tires, wheels and more upscale interior. More details can be found in the SMS press release after the jump.
