Chevy Camaro and Corvette ZR1 Duke It Out On The Asphalt, If You Think The Camaro Wins, You Might Be A Redneck

From Autoblog via MuscleCarBlog: the Chevy Camaro SS and the Chevy Corvette ZR1 were caught going pound for pound on the test track the other day. The Camaro SS actually manages to hold its own in the turns, but when it comes to balls-to-the-wall, flat-out on the straightaway, there’s really no contest.

2011 Chevy Volt Officially Revealed Today, It’s Here, It’s Queer, We’re Over It

As part of their centennial celebration, GM officially unveiled their highly anticipated plug-in hybrid, all electric vehicle, the 2011 Chevy Volt. A far cry from the concept Volt first introduced at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show, I got my first dose of reality when I got my hands on photos of the Chevy Volt as spied on the set of Transformers 2. Given Hollywood’s tendency to distort perception, I was willing to give GM the benefit of the doubt and reserve my final judgement until official photos were released. Then GM created the Chevy Volt executive centerfold spread, and my fears were confirmed. The production Volt looks almost nothing like the concept, and initially I felt betrayed, hurt, and confused. I’ve had a few weeks to digest the information though, and I arose this morning completely prepared to handle today’s official Volt unveiling in a mature, adult fashion, sans any cutting remarks.

Official details are sketchy, and GM is being stingy with the specs, but thanks to Jalopnik’s unwavering commitment to the cause, I was able to score photos a-plenty.

The new Volt, out of the closest, after the jump.

Technically classified as an Extended-Range Electric-Vehicle, the 2011 Chevy Volt tops out at 100mph and has an EPA estimated mpg - er - EV range of 40 city miles per charge [which isn't great, but still means total freedom from the gas pump]. Although I like to think of myself as reasonably open-minded, I will admit I am experiencing slight difficulties digesting the Volt’s front-wheel, 5-door sedan styling that is just a touch more Prius-y than I am comfortable with.

Chevrolet Volt Leads General Motors Into Its Second Century

DETROIT - General Motors launched its next 100 years today by unveiling the much-anticipated production version of the Chevrolet Volt - a vehicle that delivers up to 40 miles of gasoline- and emissions-free electric driving, with the extended-range capability of hundreds of additional miles.

“Revealing the production version of the Chevy Volt is a great way to open our second century,” said Rick Wagoner, GM Chairman and CEO. “The Volt is symbolic of GM’s strong commitment to the future … just the kind of technology innovation that our industry needs to respond to today’s and tomorrow’s energy and environmental challenges.”

Form follows function
The design of the Chevrolet Volt production car has evolved from the original concept that was unveiled at the 2007 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Because aerodynamics plays a key role in maximizing driving range, GM designers created an aerodynamically efficient design for the production vehicle. Many of the design cues from the concept vehicle endure in the production Volt, including the closed front grille, athletic stance, rear design graphics, outside rearview mirrors and more. The Volt’s rounded and flush front fascia, tapered corners and grille are functional, enabling air to move easily around the car. In the rear, sharp edges and a carefully designed spoiler allow the air to flow off and away quickly. An aggressive rake on the windshield and back glass help reduce turbulence and drag.

Working closely with GM aerodynamicists to shape the Volt, design and engineering teams developed one of the most aerodynamic vehicles in GM’s history. They spent hundreds of hours with the Volt in GM’s wind tunnel, testing and re-testing parts such as the front and rear quarter panels, rear spoiler, rockers and side mirrors. Aerodynamic improvements enabled GM to reach the Volt’s target of driving up to 40 miles (based on EPA city cycle) without using gasoline or producing emissions.

Inside, the Volt offers the space, comfort, convenience and safety features that customers expect in a four-passenger sedan, and it delivers them in a variety of interior color, lighting and trim options unlike any offered before on a Chevrolet sedan. Modern controls and attractive materials, two informational displays, and a touch-sensitive infotainment center with integrated shifter distinguish the Volt’s interior from other vehicles in the market.

Some of Volt’s interior technological features include:

* Driver-configurable, liquid crystal instrument display
* Standard seven-inch touch screen vehicle information display
* Touch screen-style climate and infotainment controls
* Optional navigation system with onboard hard drive for maps and music storage
* Standard Bluetooth for cellular phone and USB/Bluetooth for music streaming

New era in automotive transportation
The Chevrolet Volt is leading a new era of electrification of the automobile by creating a new class of vehicle known as the Extended-Range Electric Vehicle, or E-REV.

The Volt uses electricity to move the wheels at all times and speeds. For trips up to 40 miles, the Volt is powered only by electricity stored in its 16-kWh, lithium-ion battery. When the battery’s energy is depleted, a gasoline/E85-powered engine generator seamlessly provides electricity to power the Volt’s electric drive unit while simultaneously sustaining the charge of the battery. This mode of operation extends the range of the Volt for several hundred additional miles, until the vehicle’s battery can be charged. Unlike a conventional battery-electric vehicle, the Volt eliminates “range anxiety,” giving the confidence and peace of mind that the driver will not be stranded by a depleted battery.

The Chevrolet Volt can be plugged either into a standard household 120v outlet or use 240v for charging. The vehicle’s intelligent charging technology enables the Volt’s battery to be charged in less than three hours on a 240v outlet or about eight hours on a 120v outlet. Charge times are reduced if the battery has not been fully depleted. At a cost of about 80 cents per day (10 cents per kWh) for a full charge that will deliver up to 40 miles of electric driving, GM estimates that the Volt will be less expensive to recharge than purchasing a cup of your favorite coffee. Charging the Volt about once daily will consume less electric energy annually than the average home’s refrigerator and freezer units.

Charge out of driving
The Chevrolet Volt offers spirited driving performance in a remarkably quiet interior. More than 220 lithium-ion cells contained within the Volt’s battery pack provide ample power. The Volt’s electric drive unit delivers the equivalent of 150 horsepower, 273 lb-ft. (370 Nm) of instant torque, and a top speed of 100 miles per hour. The lack of engine noise, combined with special sound-deadening materials, make the Chevrolet Volt an extremely quiet vehicle to drive.

GM estimates that the Volt will cost about two cents per mile to drive while under battery power compared to 12 cents per mile using gasoline priced at $3.60 per gallon. For an average driver who drives 40 miles per day (or 15,000 miles per year), this amounts to a cost savings of $1,500 annually. Using peak electric rates, GM estimates that an electrically driven mile in a Chevy Volt will be about one-sixth of the cost of a conventional gasoline-powered vehicle. The cost savings are even greater when charging during off-peak hours, when electric rates are cheaper.

The Chevrolet Volt is expected to be built at GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck manufacturing facility, subject to GM successfully negotiating satisfactory government incentives. Production is scheduled to begin late 2010 for models in the United States. Pricing has not been announced. Visit media.gm.com/volt for more information.

Ford Considers Introducing A Compact XUV To The Lincoln Line-Up

Ford is expected to phase out the Escape SUV within the next decade, and when they do, talk from the top suggests they might usher in a new Lincoln model to replace it. Ford’s product development chief, Derrick Kuzak, admitted Ford is seriously considering adding a C-segment vehicle to the Lincoln line-up, most likely basing if off the Ford Kuga XUV currently sold abroad. Kuzak also hinted that the European small car the Ford Ka might be included in the American invasion, a prospect we are notably less than enthusiastic about.

Initially introduced last September at the Frankfurt Auto Show, the 2009 Ford Kuga sits on the same C1 platform shared by European model Ford S-Max minivan and the Ford Focus subcompact. Roughly equivalent in size to the Ford Escape, the Ford Kuga is essentially a European-badged Ford Edge, not an entirely drastic departure from Ford’s typical SUV template. What separates the Kuga from its American counterpart are its luxurious details, which would certainly be befitting of a Lincoln should the Kuga ever make it’s modified debut stateside. Bottom line: Ford Euro, how about this: give us a Lincoln/Kuga luxury crossover, and keep the Ka, please.

From SPIKE : “The 7 Worst Ways To Mod Your Car”

Enjoyed for the inclusion of truck nuts and cheap intake mods, posted for Bradiger’s eloquence: “This is the automotive equivalent of having ‘I’m an asshat’ tattooed on your forehead.” What can I say? I’m a sucker for a perfectly-timed vulgarity.

“Since the advent of the automobile, there have always been those among us who feel the need to take the design of a vehicle and go a step further. Some do it for speed, some for handling, and some simply for style. For many auto enthusiasts, their ride is an extension of their own personality – a window into their soul. And that’s where things can get a bit dodgy. Some people, well… their souls just weren’t that well thought-out.”

The result? Neon underglows, rhinestone’d mud flaps, and spinners, to name a few. So think of this as a public service announcement…here are the 7 worst ways to modify your car.”

The Ariel Atom brings buggy grins to all who drive it

Ariel Atom 300 Supercharged

If you were a kid with a go-kart bumblin down the neighborhood street and had any imagination at all the Ariel Atom would be what you would pretend you were driving. Some might compare it to a four-wheeled race bike, but with its two-seats and a steering wheel it is more likely the ultimate race-kart.

The light weight frame and carbon tub of the Ariel Atom is powered by a super-charged 300-hp engine that is based off the Chevy Cobalt engine. All those horses driving the mere 1400 pounds that makes up the Atom gives the car a rocket-like feel at acceleration. There is no steer-assist so every little bit of the road is communicated right up the rack-and-pinion suspension and up through the steering wheel.

Take the leap over to MotorTrend to watch a video test drive of the Ariel Atom. It the video does not make your palms itch for the wheel or your feet twitch for the feel of the accelerator you might want to check your pulse. Or maybe you prefer knitting… no that there is anything wrong with that. Knit me a scarf for the track.

GM’s Sales Drop while Hybrids and Camrys give Toyota a Boost

The June sales numbers for the auto industry have been released and over all numbers are down across the board. GM recorded the largest drop in sales among the competition while Toyota credited the sale of the Prius and Camry, along with their new Tundra, for its increase.

Toyota Camry Hybrid

GM blamed their sales drop in June on their decision to reduce their fleet sales. They also blamed the decline on lower incentive spending for the month of June. Despite recording a 21% loss in total sales across its many brands GM still sold 320,668 cars. Toyota on the other hand sold 245,739 vehicles which turned out to be a 9% increase from June the prior year. Those sales totals include both Toyota and Lexus brand cars.
Until GM begins to put a little more energy into fuel effeciency and the esthetics of their vehicles they may want to reconsider their decision to decline fleet sales. It is true that fleet sales flood the roads with a plentitude of sameness, but with mediocre styling and high volumes that is going to happen anyway. While Toyota’s recent embracing of bold design and their industry leading hybrid technology it is difficult to project them slipping from that #1 World Wide Auto Maker title.

Ontario goes on the offensive against illegal street racers

It seems that California is not the only state or province in North America that has a crush on illegal street racing. The Ontario government and the Ontario Attorney General are out to crack down on illegal street racers and the cars they so covet. In response to the outcries of the families that have been victims to illegal street racing and as its popularity in the province is reaching its pinnacle the Ontario government has passed new legislation to increase the punishment for such illegal driving. And if the Attorney General continues to get his way they will not only deprive you of your means to race, but they hope to cut you off at the curb.

ontario parliament

The new legislations passed by the Ontario parliament are summed as as follows:
 -   Police can issue an immediate roadside seven-day licence suspension
and seven-day vehicle impoundment for street racing, participating in
a driving contest or stunt driving
    -   The maximum fine increases from $1,000 to $10,000 upon conviction for
street racing, making it the highest penalty in Canada. The minimum
fine increases from $200 to $2,000
    -   Courts can impose a driver licence suspension of up to 10 years for a
second conviction, if the second conviction occurs within 10 years of
        the first conviction
    -   The Act also bans driving a motor vehicle on a highway with a
connected nitrous oxide system. Some street racers use nitrous oxide
to enhance the acceleration capabilities of their vehicle.

That is the exact breakdown of the new law as noted by the Ministry of Transportation. They are also proud to note that included in the new laws the police are now permitted to use both Red and Blue alternating lights. Those measure are reported to help improve their visibility. How very progressive.

The Attorney General of Ontario, Michael Bryant, is taking the battle against illegal street racers one step further. Like California Bryant intends to demolish any car confiscated by police for street racing. As qouted in the Canadian press Bryant said of the cars impounded, “we will seize it and you will never see it again. We will crush your car, we will crush the parts.” Attorney General Bryant went on to elaborate by saying, “If we can establish someone has parts and they’re juicing up their car — obviously for the purpose of street racing — then we can seize those vehicles”
To some Canadians and to others of the free world such harsh languish may sound a little General Tarkinton attempting to extract the location of the secret Rebel Base from a dainty Princess Leiah with Dark Vader gasping down her neck. There is a delicate balance between personal liberty and the right of the state to protect its people. The quesion will be, How far is too far and will they know it before they have superceeded it?

What do you think of the governments offensives against illegal street racing in California and Ontario? Are they going too far or are these the necessary steps to get racer off the streets?
