New BMW Z4 Marks End For 6-Cylinder M3 Engine [The Penultimate Driving Machine]

It’s time to say goodbye to one of the smoothest, most driver-friendly engines of all time: the E46 M3’s 3.2-liter straight-six. We’re paying our respects Jalopnik-style with a mega-gallery of straight-sex.

While the aesthetes in us are relieved by the 2010 BMW Z4’s lack of fish-faced ugliness, the drivers in us are a bit worried. Only available as a folding hardtop, we’re a bit concerned about the added weight and lack of a sexy coupe, but mostly, we’re disturbed by the absence the S54B32. Though the Z4 will use inline-six engines, ranging from a 2.5-litre 201bhp to a 302bhp twin-turbo 3.0-litre, it won’t be getting the 343 HP naturally aspirated 3.2-liter unit. That means the old Z4, which has now gone out of production, was the last production BMW to use the legendary powerplant.

The S54B32 engine is an evolution of the S52B32 engine of the E36 M3. It makes 343 HP at 7,900 RPM, 269 Lb-Ft of the creamiest torque you’ll ever use at 4,900 RPM and revs all the way to 8,000 RPM. It was used in the E46 M3, 2001 and 2002 Z3 M Roadster and Z3 M Coupe, the Z4 M Roadster and Coupe and even the Wiesmann Roadster.

The reasons for its popularity are two-fold: its specific power output exceeds 100 HP/liter without the aid of forced induction and its torque curve is fat, smooth and gap-free across the rev range. The S54B32 revs quickly, makes power everywhere, sounds like nothing else on the planet, responds instantly and, most importantly, is really, really fast.

The S54B32 won the overall International Engine of the Year award upon its introduction in 2001, then went on to win the 3.4-liter category for six straight years. It happens to be this particular Jalop’s favorite engine of all time, preferably housed in a flat black Z4 M Coupe, or in his dreams, a Caterham Super7, which would allow him to experience the engine as it repeatedly bounces off its redline in all its undiluted glory. BMW is Not Going to Produce the Concept CS

bmw_concept_cs_dead.jpg
Last month was a horrible month for automobile sales with most automakers posting double digit declines. Well decreased sales and profits are also cutting into the product plans for many automakers as well. BMW has announced that the Concept CS is not going to be produced because the vehicle will not be profitable.

This news means that the 7 Series will remain the top vehicle in BMW's lineup. The Concept CS was designed as a four-door coupe that was meant to compete with the Porsche Panamera, Aston Martin Rapide, and Mercedes-Benz CLS.

Cardi Body II: The Least Classy BMW 3-Series Ever [Cardi Body II]

We thought the Mitsuoka Himiko was a clever re-envisioning of the Mazda MX-5. We do not feel the same way about the Russian-built, E-36-based Cardi Body II.

We're not sure what the Body I looked like, but the Body II is an interesting mix of BMW Z8, Edsel and Playskool design languages that combine to create something distractingly unattractive. The vehicle looks especially awkward next to St. Basil's Cathedral, an example of good Russian design.

Designed by Russian design firm Cardi, underneath the yellow-green skin it is assumed the Body II is a BMW 325i (E36) equipped with the 196-horsepower version of the 2.5-liter inline-six. Cardi claims the vehicle is capable of reaching 62 mph from a cold start in 6.6 seconds with a speed-limited top speed of 155 mph.

We're not sure of the price tag, but if you have to ask... you're probably some rich Siberian oil oligarch with more money than taste and you don't care.

BMW loses Clonewars Italian court battle

Take a close look at the image. A court in Italy has just ruled that the crossover pictured above, the five-seat CEO built by Shuanghuan Automobile of Shijiazhuang, China, is not a clone of the BMW X5. Um... yeah. The legal battles began when Shuanghuan introduced their "Noble" last year, a near-clone of the Smart fortwo. Mercedes-Benz wasn't impressed, and threatened a lawsuit. Shortly thereafter, BMW started losing sleep over the Chinese CEO, an obvious facsimile of their previous-generation X5 (E53). The Bavarian automaker took Shuanghuan to court in Munich this past summer and won their case, and when Martin Motors (the distributor of Shuanghuan Automobiles in Italy and central Europe) started selling the CEO in early 2007, BMW again took legal action, this time in the Italian judicial system.

Last week, the Germans met their defeat when the Italian courts rejected their claims. To date, Martin Motors has sold about 200 copies of the CEO and expects to sell about 1200 this year in their European markets. "We are convinced the CEO wasn't a clone of the X5. We are happy to see our view supported by a court ruling," said an obviously pleased spokesperson from Martin Motors. We have to wonder how quickly the Italians would change their tune if Shuanghuan began to knock-off the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4.

Ashlee Simpson Gives Child Lame Hipster Name, Initials "B.M.W." [Offbeat News]

For some reason, Jessica Simpson's less attractive and less talented sister Ashlee is famous, and being famous apparently automatically brings mental disability. Ashlee and husband Pete Wentz have ushered in their first son and named it, wait for it, Bronx Mowgli Wentz. Initials, BMW. Yes, Mowgli, like the kid from Jungle Book. Why not just name the kid "Beat me up and take my lunch money" or "Child of vapid nobodies." We weep for society. [People]

Fireball’s “Cool Designs of the Week”

As with most weeks, I got cool stuff sent to me. “Hey Fireball! Whatta ya think of my (fill in the blank).” And with that kinda traffic coming at me, I get the privilidge of seeing the best of what’s out there. Sort of.

Well, not all of it is lip smackin’ goodness. Some of it is downright cheese of the Limberger nature. But, without more dumb explanation, here’s what cool in design this past week. And no, you can’t buy the Phat Boy Can from me. It’s on “special order” from Iceland.

Bugatti

THE BUGATTI BORDEAUX

Big and beautiful, but they’re only building them for the richest MoFo’s on the planet. So, if we get to “see” one, it’ll cost about 10K.

BMW Concept Cool

A rad BMW sketch that evokes movement, style and grace. Obviously not the traits that the final build will have, but sweet to look at. So, whatever.

TRANSFORMER CAMARO

It’s a Camaro, yes. But it’s a Transformer, too! Like,… two toys in one for the price of one! That’s like getting a Star Wars Action Figure with an extra lightsaber!!! COOL!!!

1972 BMW 2002 [Down On The Street]

Welcome to Down On The Street, where we admire old vehicles found parked on the streets of the Island That Rust Forgot: Alameda, California. BMW 2002s are plentiful on the island (we've seen a beater '72, a '73 2002Tii, and a massive-bumpered slushbox '75 so far), though technically this one isn't on the island. I've ventured over to Bay Farm Island (which was once literally an island but is now attached to the mainland at the Oakland Airport, just as the island part of Alameda was once a peninsula), which is part of Alameda but lacks sufficient garage-less housing to make for happy DOTS hunting. However, it's still possible to find interesting machinery where Jack London once went oyster pirating, and I've found this clean round-taillight 2002 there.

1972 was the last year before the Malaise Era, so the power was still there (though the new horsepower rating system pushed the numbers down) and the gigantic bumpers hadn't arrived yet at the time this car was imported.

Even though this car will need to bring tire chains to get to Tahoe this ski season- hey, that's why you need an SUV in coastal California, right?- the owner is willing to make some sacrifices in order to keep driving this car every day.

BMW could be developing 1-Series "Shooting Brake" wagon

BMW's 1 Series is stuck between a rock and a hard place, neatly slotting in between BMW's perennial best-selling 3-series and the FWD wunderkind, MINI. Loaded-up Coopers pass the $30K mark with ease and the base 3-Series model starts in the same neighborhood. This doesn't leave much wiggle room with the 1 Series, but BMW is looking to make the most of what little extra market share is available. One segment that the Bavarian automaker is looking to explore is the "shooting brake" body style (think 2-door wagon) that would add a dose of practicality to the small coupe in the form of a rear hatch.

This type of vehicle has historically fared rather poorly in the style-conscious United States, but Europeans seem more apt to choose practical hatch-like styles, so we'd expect the new model to debut across the pond for sure. BMW is expected to launch a new version of its entry-level model that will be larger and offer downsized engines with direct injection and forced induction burning both gasoline and diesel fuel.
