2011 Chevy Volt Officially Revealed Today, It’s Here, It’s Queer, We’re Over It

As part of their centennial celebration, GM officially unveiled their highly anticipated plug-in hybrid, all electric vehicle, the 2011 Chevy Volt. A far cry from the concept Volt first introduced at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show, I got my first dose of reality when I got my hands on photos of the Chevy Volt as spied on the set of Transformers 2. Given Hollywood’s tendency to distort perception, I was willing to give GM the benefit of the doubt and reserve my final judgement until official photos were released. Then GM created the Chevy Volt executive centerfold spread, and my fears were confirmed. The production Volt looks almost nothing like the concept, and initially I felt betrayed, hurt, and confused. I’ve had a few weeks to digest the information though, and I arose this morning completely prepared to handle today’s official Volt unveiling in a mature, adult fashion, sans any cutting remarks.

Official details are sketchy, and GM is being stingy with the specs, but thanks to Jalopnik’s unwavering commitment to the cause, I was able to score photos a-plenty.

The new Volt, out of the closest, after the jump.

Technically classified as an Extended-Range Electric-Vehicle, the 2011 Chevy Volt tops out at 100mph and has an EPA estimated mpg - er - EV range of 40 city miles per charge [which isn't great, but still means total freedom from the gas pump]. Although I like to think of myself as reasonably open-minded, I will admit I am experiencing slight difficulties digesting the Volt’s front-wheel, 5-door sedan styling that is just a touch more Prius-y than I am comfortable with.

Chevrolet Volt Leads General Motors Into Its Second Century

DETROIT - General Motors launched its next 100 years today by unveiling the much-anticipated production version of the Chevrolet Volt - a vehicle that delivers up to 40 miles of gasoline- and emissions-free electric driving, with the extended-range capability of hundreds of additional miles.

“Revealing the production version of the Chevy Volt is a great way to open our second century,” said Rick Wagoner, GM Chairman and CEO. “The Volt is symbolic of GM’s strong commitment to the future … just the kind of technology innovation that our industry needs to respond to today’s and tomorrow’s energy and environmental challenges.”

Form follows function
The design of the Chevrolet Volt production car has evolved from the original concept that was unveiled at the 2007 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Because aerodynamics plays a key role in maximizing driving range, GM designers created an aerodynamically efficient design for the production vehicle. Many of the design cues from the concept vehicle endure in the production Volt, including the closed front grille, athletic stance, rear design graphics, outside rearview mirrors and more. The Volt’s rounded and flush front fascia, tapered corners and grille are functional, enabling air to move easily around the car. In the rear, sharp edges and a carefully designed spoiler allow the air to flow off and away quickly. An aggressive rake on the windshield and back glass help reduce turbulence and drag.

Working closely with GM aerodynamicists to shape the Volt, design and engineering teams developed one of the most aerodynamic vehicles in GM’s history. They spent hundreds of hours with the Volt in GM’s wind tunnel, testing and re-testing parts such as the front and rear quarter panels, rear spoiler, rockers and side mirrors. Aerodynamic improvements enabled GM to reach the Volt’s target of driving up to 40 miles (based on EPA city cycle) without using gasoline or producing emissions.

Inside, the Volt offers the space, comfort, convenience and safety features that customers expect in a four-passenger sedan, and it delivers them in a variety of interior color, lighting and trim options unlike any offered before on a Chevrolet sedan. Modern controls and attractive materials, two informational displays, and a touch-sensitive infotainment center with integrated shifter distinguish the Volt’s interior from other vehicles in the market.

Some of Volt’s interior technological features include:

* Driver-configurable, liquid crystal instrument display
* Standard seven-inch touch screen vehicle information display
* Touch screen-style climate and infotainment controls
* Optional navigation system with onboard hard drive for maps and music storage
* Standard Bluetooth for cellular phone and USB/Bluetooth for music streaming

New era in automotive transportation
The Chevrolet Volt is leading a new era of electrification of the automobile by creating a new class of vehicle known as the Extended-Range Electric Vehicle, or E-REV.

The Volt uses electricity to move the wheels at all times and speeds. For trips up to 40 miles, the Volt is powered only by electricity stored in its 16-kWh, lithium-ion battery. When the battery’s energy is depleted, a gasoline/E85-powered engine generator seamlessly provides electricity to power the Volt’s electric drive unit while simultaneously sustaining the charge of the battery. This mode of operation extends the range of the Volt for several hundred additional miles, until the vehicle’s battery can be charged. Unlike a conventional battery-electric vehicle, the Volt eliminates “range anxiety,” giving the confidence and peace of mind that the driver will not be stranded by a depleted battery.

The Chevrolet Volt can be plugged either into a standard household 120v outlet or use 240v for charging. The vehicle’s intelligent charging technology enables the Volt’s battery to be charged in less than three hours on a 240v outlet or about eight hours on a 120v outlet. Charge times are reduced if the battery has not been fully depleted. At a cost of about 80 cents per day (10 cents per kWh) for a full charge that will deliver up to 40 miles of electric driving, GM estimates that the Volt will be less expensive to recharge than purchasing a cup of your favorite coffee. Charging the Volt about once daily will consume less electric energy annually than the average home’s refrigerator and freezer units.

Charge out of driving
The Chevrolet Volt offers spirited driving performance in a remarkably quiet interior. More than 220 lithium-ion cells contained within the Volt’s battery pack provide ample power. The Volt’s electric drive unit delivers the equivalent of 150 horsepower, 273 lb-ft. (370 Nm) of instant torque, and a top speed of 100 miles per hour. The lack of engine noise, combined with special sound-deadening materials, make the Chevrolet Volt an extremely quiet vehicle to drive.

GM estimates that the Volt will cost about two cents per mile to drive while under battery power compared to 12 cents per mile using gasoline priced at $3.60 per gallon. For an average driver who drives 40 miles per day (or 15,000 miles per year), this amounts to a cost savings of $1,500 annually. Using peak electric rates, GM estimates that an electrically driven mile in a Chevy Volt will be about one-sixth of the cost of a conventional gasoline-powered vehicle. The cost savings are even greater when charging during off-peak hours, when electric rates are cheaper.

The Chevrolet Volt is expected to be built at GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck manufacturing facility, subject to GM successfully negotiating satisfactory government incentives. Production is scheduled to begin late 2010 for models in the United States. Pricing has not been announced. Visit media.gm.com/volt for more information.

Suburban Hot Rods: ‘41 Willys Coupe with a 426 Hemi

Yesterday, I was at the supermarket picking up some delicious Labor Day foods, and on my way out I heard a loud, lovely, harmonious sound coming from way over yonder. Luckily I had my camera with me.

It was a very pretty ‘41 Willys Coupe with a beautiful 426 Hemi elephant. That’s a lot of engine for a little coupe. I only wish I had a chance to see it go fast.
Thanks to Al Davis Jr. and his dad for letting me take pics of their beautiful car.

The 2008 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance: A Big Weekend for the Ultra-Rich

1931 Daimler Double-Six 50 Corsica Drophead Coupe owned by Robert M. Lee. 2006 Best in Show.

For about a week every year, Monterey, California is the Mecca of rare collectible cars. The string of events will start this year, 2008, in two days, August 14th. This Thursday and Friday, they have the Concorso Italiano, which is a “celebration of Italian style”, mostly Italian cars. Saturday, they have the Monterey Historic Races, which is a loosely competitive race with all manner of historic vehicles from different years and different engine displacements all driven by their wealthy owners. And on Sunday, the big one, they have the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the Kentucky Derby of car shows. That’s an expensive weekend.

This event is so saturated with money that a series of auto auctions have sprung up to take part in the feeding frenzy. Bonhams & Butterfields will be putting up three cars for auction, a 1960 Jaguar racer, thought to possibly fetch more than $7 million; a 1939 Talbot-Lago that may bring $4 million; and a 1967 Ferrari estimated to sell for between $3 million and $4 million. That’s fifteen million dollars for 3 cars, plus all the other auctions, plus the big three events. Very heavy weekend.

1938 Bugatti Type 57SC Corsica Roadster owned by John Mozart. 1998 Best in Show.

The Concours d’Elegance is sort of a competition, since there is a #1 spot, Best in Show, and that’s what everyone shoots for. But with all the side awards, almost half of the participants win.

There will be 175 different cars, more than $100 million dollars worth of the world’s finest, rarest and most collectible cars all sitting on the links at Pebble Beach. They have 24 different classes, each with not just one winner, but 3 top places. So out of 175 entries, you have 72 coming away from the 2008 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance with some sort of award or medal that, no doubt, costs more than my car. Add the best in show, that makes 73. It really is a hell of an event they have out there. Ain’t no party like a west coast party.

It is more about admiring the cars than it is about the competition. But the Pebble Beach Concours isn’t your local car show. They say it’s a celebration of cars, and it does have some of the finest vehicles in existence today, but more than that, this event is a celebration of wealth. Just like the Kentucky Derby, it’s an outing for the ultra-wealthy. Women will wear flowered hats and the men will wear pastel colored vests and jackets and sharp fedoras. There will be a few celebrities, but for the most part, celebrities aren’t rich enough to mingle with these people. They are the very top, the old money of the world. Castle owners, network owners, people with vaguely familiar last names that have an air of importance. Bettencourt, Chambers, Redstone, Goodfellow.

I could easily say this is just a bunch of fancy old money freaks setting up an expensive event to fawn over each others collections, to gauge the worth of their peers by seeing how much they can spend on the restoration of a 1935 Duesenberg SJ Speedster. It’s easy to dismiss things like that, but that dismissal would be fueled by envy; it looks like serious fun. And I don’t know the event, I’ve never been there. Their world is so far from anything that I know and understand as to be almost like Disneyland to me, and all the rich people dressed in their hats are like the Disney characters, prancing around and getting their pictures taken and signing autographs. So I need to go there, I need to understand those people.

So I’m vowing right now that by this time next year, I will be in Monterey, California, attending the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
August 2009, the countdown begins.

Today In History: The Chevrolet Camaro Is Born

On August11, 1966, the first Chevrolet Camaro coupe rolled out of the production plant and effectively became the first Chevrolet Camaro in circulation. Sharing a platform as well as major design components with the Pontiac Firebird, the Camaro was the pony car Chevrolet designed as direct competition for the Ford Mustang. Christened the “Camaro” by then General Manager Elliot Ness, the word “Camaro” was initially said to have no meaning but was later identified as the French term for “comrade”. Since it’s birth, the Camaro has been through four generations of redesign before manufacturing was officially terminated in 2002. In 2006, production of the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro, the fifth generation Camaro, was approved by GM. Schedule for release as a 2010 model in 2009, official assembly of the 2010 Camaro is expected to begin in February of 2009 - a full 43 years since its birth.

The 2009 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid: The Green Way To Pimp

Due to it hit showrooms in the fall as a 2009 model, the new Cadillac Escalade Hybrid features all of the premium luxury associated with its name, but with a much smaller carbon footprint. Classified as a 2-Mode hybrid, the Cadillac Escalade Hybrid boasts roughly 50% better fuel efficiency than its predecessors with an EPA fuel efficiency estimate of 20 mpg city/21 hwy,

Really earning their green stripes under the hood, GM has done more than just knock a few bucks off the gas tab. In addition to cylinder deactivation [referred to by GM as “Active Fuel Management” ] late-intake technology, 42-volt electrically powered variable steering, and a regenerative braking system, the Escalade Hybrid also features a 300-volt battery pack mounted under the driver’s seat which powers the vehicle’s interior accessories and drive train. In addition to its energy-conserving technology, the Escalade Hybrid also features a pretty impressive 6.1L 332-hp V8 engine,  6-sp automatic transmission, and a 6,000 lb towing capacity – thus effectively instructing the Toyota Prius to go [aggressively fornicate] itself.

With a [reasonable, all things considered] base price of $55,990, the Escalade Hybrid also provides drivers with a center-dash mounted, full color, DVD/Navigation screen, allowing for real-time management of the Escalade’s dual hybrid modes. Although normally we’d deduct points from a luxury vehicle with faux-wood interior accents, but it’d be in poor form for a hybrid vehicle to sport enough wood [snort] to make the Sierra Club cringe – so we give the Escalade Hybrid a pass.
