Chevy Camaro and Corvette ZR1 Duke It Out On The Asphalt, If You Think The Camaro Wins, You Might Be A Redneck

From Autoblog via MuscleCarBlog: the Chevy Camaro SS and the Chevy Corvette ZR1 were caught going pound for pound on the test track the other day. The Camaro SS actually manages to hold its own in the turns, but when it comes to balls-to-the-wall, flat-out on the straightaway, there’s really no contest.

2011 Chevy Volt Officially Revealed Today, It’s Here, It’s Queer, We’re Over It

As part of their centennial celebration, GM officially unveiled their highly anticipated plug-in hybrid, all electric vehicle, the 2011 Chevy Volt. A far cry from the concept Volt first introduced at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show, I got my first dose of reality when I got my hands on photos of the Chevy Volt as spied on the set of Transformers 2. Given Hollywood’s tendency to distort perception, I was willing to give GM the benefit of the doubt and reserve my final judgement until official photos were released. Then GM created the Chevy Volt executive centerfold spread, and my fears were confirmed. The production Volt looks almost nothing like the concept, and initially I felt betrayed, hurt, and confused. I’ve had a few weeks to digest the information though, and I arose this morning completely prepared to handle today’s official Volt unveiling in a mature, adult fashion, sans any cutting remarks.

Official details are sketchy, and GM is being stingy with the specs, but thanks to Jalopnik’s unwavering commitment to the cause, I was able to score photos a-plenty.

The new Volt, out of the closest, after the jump.

Technically classified as an Extended-Range Electric-Vehicle, the 2011 Chevy Volt tops out at 100mph and has an EPA estimated mpg - er - EV range of 40 city miles per charge [which isn't great, but still means total freedom from the gas pump]. Although I like to think of myself as reasonably open-minded, I will admit I am experiencing slight difficulties digesting the Volt’s front-wheel, 5-door sedan styling that is just a touch more Prius-y than I am comfortable with.

Chevrolet Volt Leads General Motors Into Its Second Century

DETROIT - General Motors launched its next 100 years today by unveiling the much-anticipated production version of the Chevrolet Volt - a vehicle that delivers up to 40 miles of gasoline- and emissions-free electric driving, with the extended-range capability of hundreds of additional miles.

“Revealing the production version of the Chevy Volt is a great way to open our second century,” said Rick Wagoner, GM Chairman and CEO. “The Volt is symbolic of GM’s strong commitment to the future … just the kind of technology innovation that our industry needs to respond to today’s and tomorrow’s energy and environmental challenges.”

Form follows function
The design of the Chevrolet Volt production car has evolved from the original concept that was unveiled at the 2007 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Because aerodynamics plays a key role in maximizing driving range, GM designers created an aerodynamically efficient design for the production vehicle. Many of the design cues from the concept vehicle endure in the production Volt, including the closed front grille, athletic stance, rear design graphics, outside rearview mirrors and more. The Volt’s rounded and flush front fascia, tapered corners and grille are functional, enabling air to move easily around the car. In the rear, sharp edges and a carefully designed spoiler allow the air to flow off and away quickly. An aggressive rake on the windshield and back glass help reduce turbulence and drag.

Working closely with GM aerodynamicists to shape the Volt, design and engineering teams developed one of the most aerodynamic vehicles in GM’s history. They spent hundreds of hours with the Volt in GM’s wind tunnel, testing and re-testing parts such as the front and rear quarter panels, rear spoiler, rockers and side mirrors. Aerodynamic improvements enabled GM to reach the Volt’s target of driving up to 40 miles (based on EPA city cycle) without using gasoline or producing emissions.

Inside, the Volt offers the space, comfort, convenience and safety features that customers expect in a four-passenger sedan, and it delivers them in a variety of interior color, lighting and trim options unlike any offered before on a Chevrolet sedan. Modern controls and attractive materials, two informational displays, and a touch-sensitive infotainment center with integrated shifter distinguish the Volt’s interior from other vehicles in the market.

Some of Volt’s interior technological features include:

* Driver-configurable, liquid crystal instrument display
* Standard seven-inch touch screen vehicle information display
* Touch screen-style climate and infotainment controls
* Optional navigation system with onboard hard drive for maps and music storage
* Standard Bluetooth for cellular phone and USB/Bluetooth for music streaming

New era in automotive transportation
The Chevrolet Volt is leading a new era of electrification of the automobile by creating a new class of vehicle known as the Extended-Range Electric Vehicle, or E-REV.

The Volt uses electricity to move the wheels at all times and speeds. For trips up to 40 miles, the Volt is powered only by electricity stored in its 16-kWh, lithium-ion battery. When the battery’s energy is depleted, a gasoline/E85-powered engine generator seamlessly provides electricity to power the Volt’s electric drive unit while simultaneously sustaining the charge of the battery. This mode of operation extends the range of the Volt for several hundred additional miles, until the vehicle’s battery can be charged. Unlike a conventional battery-electric vehicle, the Volt eliminates “range anxiety,” giving the confidence and peace of mind that the driver will not be stranded by a depleted battery.

The Chevrolet Volt can be plugged either into a standard household 120v outlet or use 240v for charging. The vehicle’s intelligent charging technology enables the Volt’s battery to be charged in less than three hours on a 240v outlet or about eight hours on a 120v outlet. Charge times are reduced if the battery has not been fully depleted. At a cost of about 80 cents per day (10 cents per kWh) for a full charge that will deliver up to 40 miles of electric driving, GM estimates that the Volt will be less expensive to recharge than purchasing a cup of your favorite coffee. Charging the Volt about once daily will consume less electric energy annually than the average home’s refrigerator and freezer units.

Charge out of driving
The Chevrolet Volt offers spirited driving performance in a remarkably quiet interior. More than 220 lithium-ion cells contained within the Volt’s battery pack provide ample power. The Volt’s electric drive unit delivers the equivalent of 150 horsepower, 273 lb-ft. (370 Nm) of instant torque, and a top speed of 100 miles per hour. The lack of engine noise, combined with special sound-deadening materials, make the Chevrolet Volt an extremely quiet vehicle to drive.

GM estimates that the Volt will cost about two cents per mile to drive while under battery power compared to 12 cents per mile using gasoline priced at $3.60 per gallon. For an average driver who drives 40 miles per day (or 15,000 miles per year), this amounts to a cost savings of $1,500 annually. Using peak electric rates, GM estimates that an electrically driven mile in a Chevy Volt will be about one-sixth of the cost of a conventional gasoline-powered vehicle. The cost savings are even greater when charging during off-peak hours, when electric rates are cheaper.

The Chevrolet Volt is expected to be built at GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck manufacturing facility, subject to GM successfully negotiating satisfactory government incentives. Production is scheduled to begin late 2010 for models in the United States. Pricing has not been announced. Visit media.gm.com/volt for more information.

Suburban Hot Rods: ‘41 Willys Coupe with a 426 Hemi

Yesterday, I was at the supermarket picking up some delicious Labor Day foods, and on my way out I heard a loud, lovely, harmonious sound coming from way over yonder. Luckily I had my camera with me.

It was a very pretty ‘41 Willys Coupe with a beautiful 426 Hemi elephant. That’s a lot of engine for a little coupe. I only wish I had a chance to see it go fast.
Thanks to Al Davis Jr. and his dad for letting me take pics of their beautiful car.

GM Cutting Q1 Production By 250,000 Units, 30% Of Capacity [Carpocalypse Now]

General Motors announced today they will cut production in the first quarter of 2009 by 250,000 units, or approximately 30% of total capacity, affecting 21 plants in three countries.

This news follows the failure of the auto industry aid bill and news of other automakers slashing production. General Motors blames the "speed and severity" of the Carpocalypse. The list includes more than a dozen of the company's US plants. The cuts cover a wide range of vehicles, including nearly every truck line in addition to cars like the Chevy Malibu, Saturn Aura, Pontiac G6 and Cadillac CTS.

Full details in the press release below.

GM Announces Significant Production Cuts for Q1 '09

DETROIT - General Motors announced today a significant reduction of planned production for the first quarter of 2009 due to the ongoing and severe drop in industry sales, which were down 36 percent in November overall and 41 percent for GM (2007 vs. 2008). The impact of these and recently announced actions to adjust production with market demand, will result in the temporary idling of approximately 30 percent of GM's North American assembly plant volume during the first quarter of 2009 and will remove approximately 250,000 units from production.

The speed and severity of the U.S. auto market's decline has been unprecedented in recent weeks as consumers reel from the collapse of the financial markets and the resulting lack of credit for vehicle financing.

The following U.S., Canada and Mexico operations impacted by today's announcement include:

U.S.:

* Ft. Wayne (Ind.) - Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra Light Duty Regular and Extended Cab
* Flint Assembly (Mich.) - Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra Heavy Duty Regular and Crew Cab & Medium Duty
* Wentzville (Mo.) - Chevy Express, GMC Savanna
* Lansing Delta Township (Mich.) - Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia, Saturn Outlook
* Pontiac Assembly (Mich.) - Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra Heavy Duty Extended Cab
* Spring Hill (Tenn.) - Chevy Traverse
* Fairfax Assembly (Kan.) - Chevrolet Malibu/Hybrid, Saturn Aura/Hybrid
* Arlington Assembly (Texas) - Full Size SUVs: Chevy Suburban, Tahoe & Tahoe Hybrid, GMC Yukon, Yukon XL & Yukon Hybrid, Cadillac Escalade/Escalade ESV & Escalade Hybrid
* Lansing Grand River (Mich.) - Cadillac STS & CTS
* Orion (Mich.) - Chevy Malibu, Pontiac G6
* Detroit-Hamtramck (Mich.) - Buick Lucerne, Cadillac DTS
* Shreveport (La.) - Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon, Hummer H3 & H3T
* Bowling Green (Ky.) - Chevy Corvette, Cadillac XLR
* Wilmington (Del.) - Pontiac Solstice, Saturn Sky, Opel GT

Canada:

* Oshawa Consolidated - Chevy Impala
* Oshawa Truck - Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra Light Duty Extended and Crew Cab
* CAMI - Chevy Equinox, Pontiac Torrent

Mexico:

* Silao - Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra Light Duty Crew Cab, Chevy Avalanche, Cadillac Escalade EXT
* Ramos 2 - Chevy HHR, Saturn VUE, Chevy Captiva
* San Luis Potosi - Chevy Aveo, Pontiac G3

As a result of these assembly plant actions, GM will also continue to assess its powertrain and stamping capacity needs and make adjustments as appropriate.

Chevy Silverado: Penny Racer Edition

When I was in high school, my friends and I were perpetually broke. We had penny-pinched our meager paychecks from our summer jobs to scrounge up the cash for a car, but we’d neglected to factor in the “cost of ownership.” To pay for gas, my friends and I frequently “couch dove” for chump change [back when a couple of dollars could buy you a few gallons of gas], often approaching gas station attendants with approximately 5lbs of pennies in hand.

Well there’s a man in Ohio who makes us look like we were a bunch of John D. Rockefeller’s.

According to report by Cincinnati Ohio’s Local 6 news, on Tuesday, James Jones bought a new Chevy Silverado with 16 coffee cans filled with change. After incredulous dealership employees painstakingly counted all the coins, the coffee cans were found to hold a total of $16,000. James apparently paid for the remaining balance of the truck by personal check.

At 70 years old, Jones’ is old enough to have experienced the Great Depression first hand and according to his son, Dennis, has never trusted banks with his money.

Today In History: The Chevrolet Camaro Is Born

On August11, 1966, the first Chevrolet Camaro coupe rolled out of the production plant and effectively became the first Chevrolet Camaro in circulation. Sharing a platform as well as major design components with the Pontiac Firebird, the Camaro was the pony car Chevrolet designed as direct competition for the Ford Mustang. Christened the “Camaro” by then General Manager Elliot Ness, the word “Camaro” was initially said to have no meaning but was later identified as the French term for “comrade”. Since it’s birth, the Camaro has been through four generations of redesign before manufacturing was officially terminated in 2002. In 2006, production of the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro, the fifth generation Camaro, was approved by GM. Schedule for release as a 2010 model in 2009, official assembly of the 2010 Camaro is expected to begin in February of 2009 - a full 43 years since its birth.

Circling The Wagons In Denver: Chevy Biscayne, Olds Cutlass, And Plymouth Suburban [Down On The Street Bonus Edition]

This is Down On The Street Bonus Edition, where we check out interesting street-parked cars located in places other than the Island That Rust Forgot. I just got back from Denver, where I photographed a few cool old cars parked on the street, including a very nice early Mini… but you don't get to see that today. Instead, you get something even better! Denver-based Kitt and EJacobs continue to send in good stuff found in their neighborhoods (south and northwest Denver, respectively), and today we'll be admiring a trio of vintage Detroit wagons that continue to remind us that SUVs didn't always reign supreme in the family-hauling department. Make the jump for many, many photos.

The Olds and Plymouth wagons were shot by Kitt.

Here's what EJacobs has to say about this Chevy Biscayne wagon: This sucker still does trailering duty for lawn mowing equipment. Much respect for being such a raw, old working 'mobile. Probably would survive most apocalypses. And it's a wagon. The interior is disintegrating. And the rear seats are...folded down, I guess. Somehow, I think that's a permanent feature.

Gun-Barrel-Equipped Hummer, Monte Carlo, Mustang II Send Swedes Fleeing In Panic [Down On The Street Bonus Edition]

This is Down On The Street Bonus Edition, where we check out interesting street-parked cars located in places other than the Island That Rust Forgot. Today we've got some really puzzling cars found down on the Gotland, Sweden street by RobHolcombe. Jump away to see all the photos and read Rob's description.

As promised a while back! Some shots of some Detroit steel as found on the streets of Gotland, Sweden....a great big island in the middle of the Baltic. Maybe there's something here you wanna post...maybe not.

Here's the shots of a god awful Hummer H2. Who in their right mind pays to gas that thing up at $10 + / gallon? I can't even imagine with all the great european cars out there. There's a word for it but I'll skip the potty mouth. Imagine that! I mean check out the freaking chromed machine gunnies on the hood (and note the playboy chick on the hood too!). And for the piece de resistance we have the American Flag door pulls....I risked life and limb getting that shot. Who knows where the muscle head was.....

And then this old Mustang fastback? 1974? 1975? I love the racing stripes and the rust....racing to its end!

And finally the Monte Carlo....huh???? I mean of ALL cars.....
