On August11, 1966, the first Chevrolet Camaro coupe rolled out of the production plant and effectively became the first Chevrolet Camaro in circulation. Sharing a platform as well as major design components with the Pontiac Firebird, the Camaro was the pony car Chevrolet designed as direct competition for the Ford Mustang. Christened the “Camaro” by then General Manager Elliot Ness, the word “Camaro” was initially said to have no meaning but was later identified as the French term for “comrade”. Since it’s birth, the Camaro has been through four generations of redesign before manufacturing was officially terminated in 2002. In 2006, production of the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro, the fifth generation Camaro, was approved by GM. Schedule for release as a 2010 model in 2009, official assembly of the 2010 Camaro is expected to begin in February of 2009 - a full 43 years since its birth.
